Reading & Literature

A Love of Reading That Lasts a Lifetime

Our ELA program does more than teach decoding and comprehension — it cultivates readers who genuinely enjoy books. From picture books in kindergarten to novels like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby in high school, students explore diverse genres and perspectives.

Teachers guide rich, one-on-one discussions that help students connect literature to their own lives and the wider world. Every student reads at their level, challenged but never overwhelmed.

Writing with Purpose and Clarity

Every Sycamore student learns to write with intention. Elementary students master sentence and paragraph structure. Middle schoolers tackle persuasive essays and short research projects. High schoolers produce polished analytical essays, creative portfolios, and college-ready research papers.

Teachers provide detailed, line-by-line feedback on every major assignment. Students don't just get a grade — they see exactly how to improve. By graduation, every student has a portfolio of published work they're proud of.

Communication Skills

Articulate, Persuasive, and Confident

Reading and writing are only part of the equation. Sycamore students also develop strong oral communication skills through Socratic discussions, presentations, and debate exercises. In a one-on-one setting, there's nowhere to hide — every student finds their voice.

By high school, students can construct and defend an argument, analyze rhetoric in media and politics, and present ideas with clarity and confidence. These are skills that serve them in college interviews, boardrooms, and every conversation in between.
